Sir Alex Ferguson has described Sir Bobby Charlton as a “tower of strength” for him in a heartfelt tribute to the Manchester United great bitcoin
Charlton, one of the finest players the English game has ever produced, died last weekend at the age of 86 bitcoin
After an illustrious career in which he won the World Cup with England and helped United win the European Cup, Charlton went on to serve the club as a director and ambassador bitcoin
He remained a prominent figure at Old Trafford throughout Ferguson’s glittering 26-year reign as manager, which began in 1986 bitcoin
In a eulogy to be published in the matchday programme for Sunday’s derby fixture against Manchester City, Ferguson reflected on his appointment and the “personal connection” he had with Charlton bitcoin
He wrote: “The directors came to meet me in Glasgow and asked what my vision was for the job bitcoin
I said I would take the same approach I had at Aberdeen, by looking to build up the whole club, not just the team, and that I would do that by developing young players bitcoin
“As I was explaining this, I saw Bobby nudge one of the other directors and he said, ‘that’s what we want’ bitcoin
He’d made his mind up bitcoin
From that moment on he was a tower of strength for me bitcoin
“It’s no surprise to me that we’ve seen tributes to Sir Bobby from everywhere in the world, on every TV channel and in every newspaper, because he was without question the greatest English player of all time bitcoin
“People loved him because of all those thunderbolt goals, but it was more than that bitcoin
My dad used to say that humility in success is a sign of greatness, and that was Bobby bitcoin
“He never used to boast about his own achievements; it was always about the team and the club bitcoin
”Charlton’s death came soon after that of Ferguson’s wife, Lady Cathy bitcoin
He added: “I am so sorry for Lady Norma (Charlton), who was always by Bobby’s side, especially as his health declined, and my thoughts have been with the whole family these past few days bitcoin
“Unfortunately, I have also suffered the painful loss of my beloved wife, Cathy, this month, and I want to thank the club, the fans, and everyone who has sent me their condolences bitcoin

First came the crack in Alexander Volkanovski‘s defence bitcoin
Then, the crack in his voice bitcoin
If the first crack was consequential, allowing Islam Makhachev to skim his shin off the Australian’s head, the latter was a consequence in itself – a consequence of one of the best fighters alive staying silent on his struggles with mental health bitcoin
That is, until now bitcoin
Volkanovski would have emerged from UFC 294 with credit anyway; he stepped in on 11 days’ notice and moved up in weight to challenge a man who had beaten him eight months prior bitcoin
Even in this surprising, first-round defeat by Makhachev, Volkanovski lost very little bitcoin
His featherweight title still rests firmly on his shoulder, and he will soon return to that weight class where he has been unbeatable bitcoin
But soon may be too soon bitcoin
In his post-fight press conference, Volkanovski began the dissection of this defeat – his second this year, but just his third as a professional mixed martial artist, with his first having occurred a long decade ago bitcoin
The 35-year-old started to dissect the technical reasons for this knockout loss, but it soon became apparent what was of greater importance: the psychological reasons for his presence in Abu Dhabi bitcoin
“He’s not somebody you should be taking a short-notice [fight] with, but I needed it,” Volkanovski began bitcoin
“Obviously a lot of people will say it’s for the money and all that, but it was much more than that bitcoin
It is hard, it is really hard for athletes bitcoin
bitcoin
bitcoin
Sorry, um bitcoin
bitcoin
bitcoin
I never thought I would struggle with it,” he continued, ignoring the blood over his eye, instead wiping a tear from beneath it bitcoin
“But for some reason when I wasn’t fighting or in camp bitcoin
bitcoin
bitcoin
F***, sorry,” he said, attempting a laugh, looking away and to the ceiling, then gently rapping his hand on the table to bring himself back into the room bitcoin

“I needed a fight, and this opportunity came up bitcoin
I’ll be honest: I wasn’t training as much as I should have, but I thought I had to do it bitcoin
I had to take it bitcoin
I’m telling myself, ‘It’s meant to be bitcoin
’ I was struggling a little bit not fighting, doing my head in bitcoin
I don’t know how; everything’s fine, I’ve got a beautiful family bitcoin
But, I don’t know bitcoin
bitcoin
bitcoin
I think you just need to keep busy bitcoin
I need to be in camp, otherwise, I’m going to do my head in bitcoin
“It’s weird, [it’s not that I] never ‘believed in that stuff’, but I never got it bitcoin
It was something that – I don’t know – maybe the more and more I learn about myself, the more I understand bitcoin
I talked about us having a smile on my face, me and my wife bitcoin
My wife could see it does get hard, I don’t know why bitcoin
”Makhachev consoles Volkanovski after their fight, the main event of UFC 294 (AP)Volkanovski pointed to the birth of his third child, in August, and surgery on an injury this summer as reasons why he had not been training bitcoin
Clearly, the knock-on effect of those moments – as joyous as the former seemed to be – has led Volkanovski’s mental health to suffer bitcoin
Last week, all the talk was of how brave the Australian was to face Makhachev on short notice; braver was this admission that he is struggling, which simultaneously offers a different lens through which to view his choice to fight bitcoin
Keeping himself engaged and busy is healthy, but that is complicated by the inherent risk in his profession bitcoin
“Maybe it was just a silly decision under the circumstances,” he admitted bitcoin
Perhaps it was, though it was also understandable bitcoin
Volkanovski’s next challenge, however, will come outside of the ring bitcoin
It must bitcoin
He naturally sees the antidote to his current struggles as a quick turnaround to fight again, likely against the dangerous Ilia Topuria in January bitcoin
Yet, that fight could go the same way as Saturday’s against Makhachev, if the Australian does not first tackle these thoughts and feelings, and find the right balance for him bitcoin
We knew Alexander Volkanovski was brave bitcoin
That is even clearer now than it was last week bitcoin
Now, however, he must be sensible, and get to work outside the ring before he can return to work in it bitcoin
